CHLORELLA VS. SPIRULINA | SUPERFOOD | WHY?

Superfoods? Are they really as super as they claim to be? How do we know the difference and why is this called a superfood? Well, we had many questions.
At Juicelous we wanted to know the answers and today we share our research with you in this blog.

We took two similar looking and smelling superfoods. Chlorella and spirulina. If they would have told us it was spinach powder we would have believed them also because they look exactly the same apart from the smell. Both chlorella and spirulina are algae. That’s where the fishy smell comes from. Chlorella is a green algae that grows in sweet water. Spirulina is a blue-green algae that grows in saltwater. Let us start with chlorella.

CHLORELLA

We found out that apart from the nasty smell and taste chlorella has loads of health benefits. The main benefit is that it contains a high percentage of chlorophyll which is just a fancy word for green. The darker green the leaves are colored the better and healthier the vegetable or plant is. In this case, the algae are almost blackish green. So, super healthy. But how?

The chlorophyll (green) in chlorella contains 58% egg whites and 18 of the 20 fundamental amino acids our body needs to perform well during the day. This means that chlorella is rich in vitamins, minerals, and enzymes. The combo is really good for everyone but especially for vegetarians. The egg whites in chlorella are similar to the ones we normally get from eating meat.

The best and purest quality of chlorella comes from South-East Azia.

SPIRULINA

The benefits of spirulina where quite the same but if we had to choose one over the other spirulina would definitely win and here’s why.
Apart from the chlorophyll, vitamins, minerals, enzymes and 18 amino acids (like in chlorella), spirulina contains 70% egg whites! Even better for a meat-free diet or after a good gym session. Spirulina mainly grows in lakes that contain a high concentration of minerals like found in Mexico or Afrika. The least pure qualities of spirulina come from America or China because they are commercially produced.

VERDICT

In our opinion, spirulina kicks chlorella’s butt. This is mainly because most of the Juicelous team is vegetarian and the list of benefits is way longer.
Both taste horrible but if you pimp your green powder with some plant-based milk like coconut, fresh fruit like a sweet banana, blue or strawberries and some healthy nuts and seeds its a true treat.

The bitter taste comes from the high concentration of chlorophyll. You can add extra sugar (because the fruit you added is already a sweetener) like a little agave syrup or natural honey but this is, of course, a little less healthy. If you prefer it plain, deluded in water with no added goodies we advise you to close your nose when you drink it and think of all the healthy benefits that enter your body. Otherwise, we cannot guarantee you can hold it down. If you think this is all a hassle they also sell them in tablet form.

One last piece of advice. Watch out for expensive knock-offs! There are a lot of powders on the market that contain only 1% chlorella or spirulina. Check where it originally comes from. Like we said before the best chlorella comes from South-East Azia and the best spirulina is either from Mexico or Afrika.

We totally agree with the term “superfood” because if we look at the list of benefits they are truly SUPER!
